The majority of training is generally conducted off the job, but practical on job training is also an integral part of the Apprenticeship. How long is an Australian Apprenticeship?Apprenticeships generally have a nominal term of 48 months full time, with the option of early sign off. Part time Australian apprenticeships have a pro-rata term of contract dependent on hours worked. Is there a trial period?A probationary period of generally 3 months applies to full time Australian Apprenticeships. Within the probationary period, either party can withdraw from the Australian Apprenticeship without obligation or penalty. Who pays for the course and how much does it cost? The State Government subsidises the majority of the cost of the training with the balance being negotiated between the employer and apprentice. Generally, the fees are charged to the apprentice, but some Awards actually stipulate that the employer must pay the course fees. Are there any incentives?Australian Apprenticeships may attract Australian Government incentives of up to $4000 free of GST. However, there could be a range of additional employer and apprentice incentives available if the qualification undertaken is in a skill shortage occupation. A detailed assessment by ATEC needs to be completed before confirmation of eligibility for these incentives. Factors that can affect eligibility for Incentives include qualifications held prior to commencing the apprenticeship. Please click here for more information on incentives available.
